Job Description

The College of Veterinary Medicine at MU is on a mission to educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth, all of which promote and protect the health and welfare of animals and people. Simply put, our mission is to Teach, Heal, Discover and Serve.

We are seeking an energetic Veterinary Technician to join our passionate Oncology service, specifically working on the Surgical Oncology team. The mission of our Oncology service is to provide state-of-the-art, compassionate cancer care for animals and to teach veterinary students, interns and residents about safe and proper diagnostics and treatments. In addition, we strive to advance evidence-based cancer medicine among all species with an emphasis in our research on comparative medicine. The service focuses on a team approach and seeks a new member to join us in providing crucial services to our clients and patients.

Primary responsibilities for Veterinary Technicians may include:

  • Conduct initial exam of animals including taking vital signs, drawing blood, collecting specimens, and gathering medical histories.
  • Monitor hospitalized patients, assist with procedures and treatments, administer medication as prescribed by a veterinarian.
  • Safely restrain, handle and transport patients
  • Prepare equipment for surgical procedures; clean and organize treatment and examination rooms.
  • Support the surgical team as necessary in the operating room.
  • Educate clients and owners on treatment plans, behavior changes, feeding, exercise and overall wellness for their animals, and update patient medical records.
  • Participate in teaching veterinary students and assist with research activities.
  • Respond to phone and email inquiries regarding appointments, patient care, and other client questions and follow-up
  • Utilize hospital information system and other software for data entry (specifically our electronic medical records system and Microsoft Teams)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment.

Shift

Full-time 40 hours per week with typical hours being Monday through Friday, between 8am and 5pm or 9am to 6pm.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program.
  • Licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Missouri, or eligibility to obtain Missouri Licensure within 6 months after start date.

  • Enjoy working with animals and have the ability to comfort, handle and restrain large and small pets.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: Hiring range begins at $19.00 per hour for new graduates without a license and $20.00 per hour for those with a license.
