| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The
UNC Institute for the Environment (IE) has a multifaceted mission: (1) To strengthen environmental research capacity across
UNC by supporting a multi-disciplinary community of scholars that enhances collaboration, increases sharing of knowledge, and identifies solutions to the world's critical environmental problems. (2) To work in partnership across
UNC and with external partners to coordinate and deliver 21st century educational programs that provide students with the experience and skills to thrive in a growing global economy. | Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Center for Public Engagement with Science (
CPES) in the
UNC Institute for the Environment (
UNC-IE) seeks a Research Specialist. The
CPES partners with
UNC faculty, staff, students, and external collaborators to translate environmental science research into action in North Carolina (NC) communities. The Research Specialist full-time position will support multiple informal science education projects focused on environmental science and health issues relevant to NC, including community-engaged research initiatives.
This position will support youth, educator and undergraduate programming. The Research Specialist responsibilities include developing and piloting educational materials for formal and informal education contexts, managing logistics for professional development sessions and science enrichment programs, and collection and analysis of environmental and evaluation data. The Research Specialist will contribute to report-back of environmental health research findings in NC communities and other presentations of research findings (including posters and manuscripts). The position also will support an undergraduate training program and other
CPES programming, as needed, and may manage student assistants.
This position is supported by Youth Engaging in the Science of Resilience: Sensing the Environment and Envisioning Solutions (
NSF), the
UNC Superfund Research Program (
NIEHS), and 21st Century Environmental Health Scholars (
NIEHS), and other awards.
Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
| Management Preferences |
* Experience implementing informal science education with youth, especially addressing geoscience and environmental health content
* Experience with community-engaged water quality research
* Experience using
SPSS and Atlas-ti to analyze research data
* Familiarity with best practices in reporting research results to communities
* Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills |
