What your job will be like:

Working with the scientific and technical staff of the Center for Injectors and Sources, the incumbent scientist will perform research and development of technologies for improving the parity quality beam performance of the polarized electron source and photoinjector of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. This includes the operation and maintenance of a dc-high voltage photogun which provides the high current polarized electron beams with long operating lifetime. Critical job activities include the design and testing of photocathodes which provide very high spin polarization, with high quantum efficiency and low anisotropies, using specialized lasers to tailor the helicity correlated beam properties, and utilizing advanced diagnostics such as an electron spin polarimeter. The incumbent scientist will have the opportunity to participate in broader collaborative activities with laboratory staff and the user community to develop and test new ideas related to the mission of the lab.

In this job you will:
  • Lead a research program to design, fabricate and evaluate spin-polarized of photocathodes.
  • Design, assemble and align static or electro-optical components to control the polarization of laser light.
  • Align and characterize drive lasers for photoguns.
  • Perform UHV vacuum work, using pumps, valves, gauges, and degassing techniques.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion.
  • Design, build, assemble or operate high voltage systems.
  • Design, build, measure optics of electron beam lines.
  • Design, build, test extreme high vacuum systems.
