POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lead Electrical Start-up & Commissioning Technician is responsible for leading the commissioning, checkout, startup, and operational readiness of all plant electrical systems. This role serves as the primary field lead for electrical commissioning activities and ensures all systems are installed, tested, and operated in accordance with design requirements, project specifications, and safety standards.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of startup packages and commissioning documentation.
  • Track, control, and maintain all documentation required for proper execution of startup and turnover packages.
  • Assist in the development of commissioning procedures to satisfy contract requirements and coordinate startup activities.
  • Lead planning and preparation for electrical startup activities and major milestones.
  • Verify electrical systems are installed in accordance with design drawings and specifications.
  • Verify electrical loads and system configurations meet design requirements.
  • Perform and document field engineering changes and update as-built drawings.
  • Test and commission generators, AVR systems, synchronization equipment, and associated systems.
  • Perform and oversee complex relay testing and protection system validation.
  • Supervise electrical testing activities performed by subcontractors and technicians.
  • Coordinate daily activities with Construction, I&C, and other discipline leads.
  • Perform system functional testing from DCS and validate control sequences and interlocks.
  • Verify plant electrical interlock systems and system protection schemes.
  • Perform switching operations on high and medium voltage systems in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Track, record, and report commissioning progress for assigned systems.
  • Support plant operations during initial startup and commissioning phases.
  • Utilize and interface with electrical systems, software and tools (Multilin, PLCs, relays, etc.).
  • Support development and execution of system turnover from Construction to Startup (CTO to STO).
  • Provide leadership and technical direction to electrical commissioning personnel.
  • Oversee installation, inspection, alignment of medium- and high voltage switchgear systems (e.g., 4.16KV, 13.8KV, etc.)
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive list of required electrical testing equipment basedd on project scope.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate leadership and commitment to an Incident-Free workplace.
  • Comply with all company and project-specific safety programs.
  • Participate in and lead daily toolbox meetings as required.
  • Set a personal example of safe work practices.
  • Ensure all electrical commissioning activities are performed in accordance with safety procedures and permit requirements.
  • Coordinate lock out tag out boundaries for electrical equipment.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of commissioning and startup experience with progressive responsibility in power generation, industrial, or similar facilities.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical commissioning and startup testing techniques.
  • Previous experience as a Lead Electrical Start-up Technician or equivalent role preferred.
  • Experience with both new construction and retrofit projects preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, procedures, contracts, and subcontracts.
  • Ability to write reports, document commissioning activities, and communicate technical issues.
  • Strong communication skills with project management, engineering, subcontractors, and startup teams.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, and diagrammatic instructions.
  • Working knowledge of medium and high voltage electrical systems including switchgear, transformers, and distribution systems
  • Knowledge of electrical testing methods and equipment, including insulation resistance testing, continuity testing, grounding tests, and functional verification of electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of cable installation and terminations, including proper handling , phasing, and testing requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
  • May need to maintain physical strength and stamina; Use arms, hands, and legs fully; Push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.
  • Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.
  • Uncontrolled environmental conditions: Constant change in weather and site conditions.
  • This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to- safety toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.).
  • Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
  • May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.
  • Evaluate information based on measurable standards; and see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
  • Keep good balance and work at heights.
  • See well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Hear well (either naturally or with correction.)
  • Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.

HOURS:

This position is a Full-Time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to projects requirements.

TRAVEL:

Travel required up to 90%. Position requires presence directly on the Project Site location with intermittent travel to residence of record.
