Clinical Radiation Physicist - RWJBarnabas Health

The Perfusionist is responsible for providing advanced clinical support during cardiovascular surgical procedures by operating the heart-lung machine and managing extracorporeal circulation. The Perfusionist monitors patient physiology, administers medications through the extracorporeal circuit, and operates specialized equipment including autotransfusion devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, ventricular assist devices, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) circuits, and other cardiovascular support technologies. This role works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and the cardiovascular surgical team to ensure safe and effective patient care throughout procedures. The Perfusionist also participates in quality improvement initiatives, education, research activities, equipment maintenance, and accurate clinical documentation. The Perfusionist will provide coverage for various shifts, including days, nights, rotating holidays, and on-call responsibilities.

A typical day for a Perfusionist may include:

As a Perfusionist, you will:
* Review patient charts prior to procedures and document relevant clinical information required for perfusion management.
* Prepare extracorporeal and cardioplegia circuits to ensure equipment readiness prior to surgery.
* Prepare and manage autotransfusion systems with required fluids and supplies.
* Perform equipment checks, quality controls, and calibrations to ensure safe operation.
* Ensure readiness to initiate cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) prior to patient induction.
* Operate the heart-lung machine and safely manage cardiopulmonary bypass in collaboration with the surgical team.
* Monitor patient physiological status, laboratory values, and clinical data throughout procedures.
* Make appropriate adjustments to CPB management based on patient condition and laboratory results.
* Communicate effectively with physicians and surgical team members regarding patient status and perfusion care.
* Maintain complete and accurate perfusion records for each case.
* Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by properly cleaning and maintaining equipment after each procedure.
* Remain available throughout assigned procedures and respond appropriately if CPB needs to be initiated or reinitiated.
* Maintain inventory levels and ensure medications, disposables, and supplies are available.
* Serve as a circulating Perfusionist by checking operating rooms and assisting the primary Perfusionist as needed.
* Participate in continuing education, professional development, quality improvement, and departmental initiatives.

To be considered for this Perfusionist opportunity:

Required Qualifications:
* Graduate of a Council on Allied Health Education Administration (CAHEA) approved perfusion training program.
* Certified or certified eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
* Candidates not certified at the time of hire must successfully obtain Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) certification within two examination cycles.
* Must successfully complete all required orientation programs.
* Must maintain continuing education requirements to support national certification and applicable state licensure.
