Instructor - Classics

The Department of Classics invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for part-time- to full-time positions for the instruction of face-to-face courses. The Instructor is an instructional, adjunct faculty position that is not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. This is a term appointment for the Summer 2026 semester. Renewal will be based upon unit needs and funding as well as performance that meets expectations, not to exceed two continuous semesters.

The Instructor is a union covered position within the collective bargaining unit represented by United Academics of Kansas University (UAKU). UAKU is the exclusive bargaining representative for the bargaining unit. As the State of Kansas is a right to work state, you have the right to be a member or not to be a member of the union without fear of personal or professional repercussions.

Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Specifically, we cannot currently offer employment to candidates residing in the following states: California, Delaware, Idaho, and Minnesota. 100% Instructional Duties:

• As an instructor for the university, primary duties and responsibilities include: teaching in a specific field, developing course materials, developing and managing syllabi, creating lectures and assignments, grading student work, advising students and holding office hours.
• All instructors are expected to collaborate with colleagues, be current in the field, and are required to adhere to departmental, school/college and university polices and procedures.
• Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, must make arrangements for an appropriate substitute. Classes should not be cancelled.
• Provide instruction throughout the semester, develop appropriate material for class sessions and/or discussion sections, lead discussion sections, grade assignments in a timely manner, provide students with regular and precise information about their progress in the course, and give students clear information about how to improve their performance in the course.
• Hold regular office hours for students in the classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. Be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
• Keep an orderly grade book (using the department software) and clear records of all evaluations of student work in the course. All these materials should be turned in to the department at the close of the semester.
• Maintain standards of excellence in teaching and in the evaluation of student performance.

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in c.v., and (3) information provided from professional references if requested.

For Instruction of Undergraduate-Level Courses:

1. MA in discipline or relevant field
2. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively as evidenced by cover letter, teaching history and resume.

For Instruction of Graduate-Level Courses:

1. PhD degree in Classics, Art History, or related field.
2. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively as evidenced by cover letter, teaching history and resume.
