Genetic Counselor - Prenatal & Perinatal
Location: Mercy St. Louis
Schedule: Full-Time (40 hours/week, weekdays)
Call Requirements: No weekends, holidays, or call
Position Overview:
Mercy St. Louis is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Genetic Counselor to provide comprehensive prenatal and perinatal genetic counseling services. In this role, you will deliver ambulatory and virtual care to patients and families, working collaboratively with Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, medical geneticists, and a multidisciplinary care team.

Position Details:
Key Responsibilities Patient Care & Counseling
- Provide expert prenatal genetic counseling and education to patients and families.
- Support patients through screening and diagnostic testing decisions and outcomes.
- Develop and deliver patient-centered education materials and programs.
Care Coordination
- Coordinate scheduling of counseling sessions and diagnostic services (e.g., amniocentesis, blood tests).
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including MFM specialists, geneticists, sonographers, and laboratory professionals.
- Ensure seamless service coordination and adherence to care standards.
Clinical Documentation & Quality
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, reports, lab results, and statistics.
- Monitor outstanding tests and ensure timely communication of results to patients and referring providers.
- Support billing processes by ensuring timely documentation of patient encounters.
Communication
- Communicate consultation summaries, test results, and follow-up recommendations to patients and providers.
- Maintain strong relationships with patients, families, and clinical teams through clear and compassionate communication.
Research & Education
- Participate in clinical research activities including study design, patient recruitment, and data analysis.
- Contribute to education for residents and medical students through counseling sessions and lectures.
- Stay current with advancements in prenatal genetic counseling and incorporate innovative practices into care delivery.
Safety & Compliance
- Uphold patient confidentiality and privacy standards.
- Adhere to infection control, safety, and environmental policies.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or Human/Medical Genetics required
- Certification: Board Certified or Board Eligible (ABGC or ABMG)
- Board-eligible candidates must obtain certification at the earliest opportunity post-hire
- Skills:
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent customer service and patient-centered care approach
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
