Essential Job Duties
Join NC State Facilities as an Electronics Specialist and play a critical role in supporting the systems that keep our campus running. This position provides advanced technical expertise in the maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of sophisticated electronic and digital control systems within our thermal plant operations.
As an Electronics Specialist, you will work with the technology and infrastructure that support high-pressure boilers, chillers, cogeneration systems, and other critical utility equipment. Your work will directly contribute to the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of essential services across campus. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently troubleshoot mechanical, electromechanical, electronic, and digital control systems for thermal plant equipment, including chillers, boilers, fuel systems, and cooling towers.
  • Identify and resolve unusual or complex plant control issues that require in-depth analysis and the application of journey-level trade knowledge.
  • Diagnose and repair network communication issues and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to ensure seamless data flow and equipment monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot non-standard electronic devices (controllers, transmitters, sensors, actuators) even in instances where documentation is incomplete or unavailable.
  • Independently perform recurring PM on control systems and field devices to prevent equipment downtime and ensure peak efficiency.
  • Execute service and maintenance on thermal plant digital control systems, managing both physical hardware and the underlying software interfaces.
  • Perform non-recurring tasks, including the installation of meters and specialized control devices, utilizing advanced electronic principles.

  • Calibrate, test, and maintain a variety of field devices to ensure accurate sensing and mechanical response within the utility plant.
  • Ensure all installations and repairs meet or exceed State and University codes, as well as Facilities Division standards.
  • Conduct thorough inspections prior to, during, and upon completion of work to verify the proper maintenance of utility systems.
  • Maintain strict safety standards while working on high-performance utility systems to protect personnel and university assets.
  • Gather and interpret system information to understand the nature of complex malfunctions and determine the most efficient course of action.
  • Evaluate multiple repair options, considering potential outcomes and operational impacts, before implementing solutions.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors, team members, and the general public to facilitate smooth daily operations.
  • Comprehend and execute verbal and written instructions regarding work assignments, safety protocols, and general workplace matters.
  • Lift and transport materials weighing up to 60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

Other Responsibilities

  • Hours are subject to change to meet the needs of the University.
  • This position is subject to emergency call back, weekend work and rotational on-call.
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment of safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear plugs.
  • Additional safety equipment to include respirator, welding leathers, welding shield, hardhat, and/or other gear related to the work site.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education

Associate's Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience troubleshooting mechanical, electromechanical, electronic, and digital control systems related with thermal plant equipment and control systems for the operation of chillers, boilers, pumps, fuel systems, cooling towers, cogeneration systems, etc.
  • Experience with thermal loops (steam and chilled water) in a multi-building campus environment.
  • Experience with PLC-based control systems, including Honeywell HC900 based systems
  • Experience in troubleshooting data networks, computers and software to determine point of failure.
  • Ability to work independently and use critical thinking skills.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid DL required.
  • A valid North Carolina driver's license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained.
