Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an International Services Adviser for International Student Services (
ISS). Reporting to the Director of International Student Services, the international student adviser (
ISA) will work as a member of ISSS' Student Services team, delivering immigration services and holistic support to undergraduate and graduate international students at Rutgers University.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in issuing SEVIS documents for international students to obtain, maintain and apply for the benefits of their legal international student or exchange visitor status.
- Advises students in individual and group settings on opportunities, rights and responsibilities under the law and refer to other University departments, attorneys, or governmental agencies as necessary.
- Counsels international students on all personal, health, social, cultural, financial, and immigration matters related to their stay.
- Takes on projects in specialty areas such as technology-based communications, innovative cross-cultural programming, monitoring regulatory changes affecting international students, and/or other specialty areas.
- Participates as a full member of the unit's professional team in developing, administering and evaluating the unit's overall operation and programming.
- Collaborates cross functionally with other ISSS offices at Rutgers Global as well as other Rutgers staff, schools, departments and outside organizations as needed.
- Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Two (2) years of professional experience. The experience must have included learning a body of specialized knowledge specific to the job, exercising critical thinking skills to solve problems, and customer or client services work.

- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (specifically Word and Excel), some data-based programs, and proficiency using the internet as a research tool.
- Interest and commitment to meeting the needs specific to international students and scholars.
- In order to qualify for federal agency approval to issue visa eligibility certificates, the successful candidate must have U.S. citizenship or permanent residence.
- May require participation as a presenter or attendee in professional conferences and professional development opportunities at the local, regional, and national levels.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, collaborate within a team, and work independently, if needed.

- Master's degree or some graduate study.
- Degree in international relations, anthropology, area studies, foreign languages or other field directly related to working with international students.
- Ability to exercise discretion and cultural sensitivity.
- Ability to serve as a neutral representative of Rutgers and can advise fairly and diplomatically.
- Experience advising international students in an academic environment.
- Experience living and/or working abroad.
- Knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
- Familiarity with F-1 and/or J-1 regulations and with SEVIS.
