Job Summary

Using established protocols perform phlebotomy on various species to collect blood and process that blood into blood components for the blood bank and transfusion medicine service. Manage the inventory of blood products across species to ensure blood components available meet the clinical demand of the VMTH (Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital). Ensure that blood product sold to outside entities is in compliance with regulatory requirements that have been established. Maintain supplies and equipment of the blood bank and monitor the health status of blood donors within UCD and VMTH protocols and policies.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No minimum education requirement.
  • Experience in a veterinary or equivalent animal setting.
  • Experience with phlebotomy of various species.
  • Knowledge and experience performing phlebotomy and intravenous catheterization in multiple species
  • Knowledge of microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, and husbandry of blood donors adequate enough to understand written and verbal instruction regarding donor care and blood banking.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • Knowledge of basic protocols for the handling of blood products and cellular therapies.
  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and diplomacy to interact with a diverse group of people: faculty, clients, residents, students, staff and general public regarding Transfusion Medicine Service, Blood banking, and community blood donor program.

The VMTH is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
