Responsibilities
Summary Responsible for the coordinating the functions of the Classification Department. Supervises the Reentry Staff (sub-contracted) and provides counseling services, assists the inmates in adjusting to institutional life and in selecting appropriate self-help, therapeutic, educational and/or vocational programs; and to obtain needed services or changes in assignment. Serves as a member of the institutional Reclassification Committee. Performs other related work as required. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises the Re-entry Staff to ensure that all policies, laws and regulations are followed.
- Provide individual counseling to inmates on an informal basis regarding work and housing assignments, adjustment problems and family problems
- Reviews and approve inmates' requests for transfer, job change, work release, etc. and refer cases as deemed appropriate.
- Determines inmate eligibility for program recommendations and whether such program recommendations would be beneficial to the inmate's overall adjustment to the facility. Monitors inmates' custody, housing, job and program assignments to ensure all inmates are reviewed in a timely manner.
- Makes referrals for inmates with serious problems to professional counseling staff.
- Updates the facility classification review forms.
- Must be knowledgeable of the Agency's Classification Plan, applicable court orders or decrees and ACA standards which relate to classification. Reviews inmate activity plans developed by Classification Officers to ensure they meet standards.
- Works closely with other departments to determine areas needing additional inmate workers.
- Reviews inmate medical status to determine inmate's eligibility to work in job assignments.
- Responsible for use of computer application to record educational/habilitative programs.
- Responsible for maintaining and complying with ACA standards pertaining to classification.
- Evaluates staff on job performance.
- Ensures that all vacant positions are advertised and filled.
- Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined, and assigned as needed.
- Interviews any prospective applicants for the classification or records positions.
- Ensures that all reports and special projects are completed within the required deadlines.
- Corresponds with outside agencies and persons per facility protocol.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, or a closely related field is desirable, however, a Bachelor's degree in other fields is acceptable; and two (2) years experience in caseload management of offenders in a correctional setting; or a combination of education and experience in a related field.
- Ability to prepare written reports; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and to learn rules, regulations and security procedures required by the facility.
- Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
