Job Title: Quality Control and Lab Supervisor

Location: Beaumont, TX

Reports to: Operations Manager

Compensation: $90,000 - $95,000 + bonus + benefits

Scope of the position

Be committed to producing quality, safe and legal products that meet or exceed our customer's specifications. Duties include but are not limited to supervising and conducting the physical and chemical analyses of raw materials, in-process and finished products. Acts for the Quality Manager in their absence or when responsibilities are delegated. Responsible for the plant's ISO 9000 Quality system. Ensures all related to ISO 9000 SOPs pertaining to, safety, operations, and personal conduct are followed. Provides inventory and production planning support through assignment and tracking of lots including label control. Directs the work of one Laboratory Technician.

Oversees the day-to-day activities of the Main Laboratory and Control Room Laboratory to assure product quality and customer satisfaction. Continually works on improvement projects to upgrade processes and procedures associated with the Laboratories. Interfaces with customers to provide quality information. Coordinates SBS lotting and shipments with the customer. Serves as a backup for the Traffic and Inventory Coordinator.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Laboratory tasks (50%):

    Develops written test procedures as per compendia methods.
  • Trains Analysts on approved test procedures and provides written documentation of training. Provides annual certification of Analysts qualifications on compendia methods.
  • Verifies that analysts are performing tests as per written procedures.
  • Reviews current test procedures for accuracy.
  • Coordinates analyses on Raw Materials, in-process and finished products in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Investigates out of specification laboratory results and provides written documentation for Operations Manager and storing on DMS (SharePoint)
  • Coordinates outside laboratory testing and reports/ results.
  • Analyses product to verify quality
  • Manages Main Laboratory and Control Room Laboratory inventory
  • Obtains quotes on Laboratory materials, creates purchase requisitions, and receives orders
  • Keeps instruments in good repair and orders new equipment, as needed
  • Coordinates maintenance of equipment, as needed. Follows through with vendor recommended action plan, as needed.
  • Writes and revises Laboratory procedures for both the Main Laboratory and the Control Room Laboratory, as needed
  • Maintains customer specifications and COAs (Certificate of Analysis)
  • Coordinates updating customer specifications within SAP
  • Works closely with the customers to address quality issues and provides COAs (Certificate of Analysis) on each shipment
  • Trains new Laboratory Personnel, as needed
  • Trains Operators, Pumpers, Utility Mechanics, as needed
  • Escalates any quality issues to Staff/On-Call/Operators/Pumpers/Utility Mechanics
  • Prepares and arranges shipment of Laboratory samples
  • Analyses storm water and summarizes them for the monthly DMR (Discharge Monitoring Report) submittal
  • Introduces new chemicals, as needed, for Laboratory operation
  • Collaborates with Traffic & Inventory Clerk, Operations, and Pumpers
  • Collaborates with Chemtrade Central Lab, as needed
  • Responsible for analytical support and assistance when troubleshooting plant operations
  • Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on complex analytical equipment
  • Helps to ensure all lab operations meet or exceed environmental and safety regulations

Special projects/studies: 25%

  • Interaction modeling of manufactured products at site, including set up, analytical measurements and follow on data evaluations, summary and distribution.
  • Detailed investigation into alternate methodology to achieve customer specifications. This included interface with instrumentation manufacturer, method development and detailed verification - QA/QC efforts related to new procedure set up.
  • Investigation into laboratory hazardous waste reduction.
  • Generates and implements improvement projects associated with the Main Laboratory and Control Room Laboratory
  • Implements new maintenance procedures/practices for laboratory equipment
  • Partnership with main lab to support initiatives.
  • Participates in Lean Six Sigma events for process improvements.

Quality System - NSF, ISO: 20%

  • Is responsible for the maintenance of the NSF system at site. This includes accurate reviews of raw materials; ensuring proper updates are made to each registered formulations, accurate upkeep of the all NSF files, submission of the required annual samples and direct interface with the auditors.
  • Responsible for the ISO laboratory calibrations systems. Additionally, in the process of training to become Chemtrade ISO auditor.
  • Leads plant quality management system by communicating with registrar and auditors, maintaining corrective/preventive action system, scheduling internal audits, and facilitating quarterly management reviews.

Back up to Traffic & Inventory Coordinator: 5%

  • During vacations/illness, serves as back up to Traffic & Inventory Coordinator.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 3 - 5 years' experience in chemicals manufacturing or related field.
  • Demonstrate team and leadership skills.
  • Experience in calibration, troubleshooting instrument issues, and analytical methods.
  • Attention to detail, adaptability, being a self-starter, and good communication skills (verbal and written) are essential.
  • Ability to act independently and on one's own initiative
  • Good mathematical abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

Preferred:

  • BS degree in Engineering preferred
  • SAP S4 experience.
  • Experience with ISO 9001, RC 14001, or similar management system
  • Basic understanding of Measurement Systems Analysis
  • Knowledge of plant operations
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control
  • Proficient at SOP Development and Review

  • Employee is frequently required to stand for large part of day and may have to stand in one position for periods of time. Employee is occasionally required to climb stairs.
  • Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job may include close vision and color recognition.
  • Must be physically capable of spending long hours standing and sitting.
  • Must be "fit for duty".
  • Ability to work as a TEAM member within the facility and other labs within Chemtrade.
  • Safety is a job requirement

Must be able to perform under the following conditions:

  • Work in awkward or confining workspaces.
  • Work in outdoor environment.
