Job Summary

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a licensed professional to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions appropriately, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

The (level I) Scrub Technologist is a competent first year scrub practitioner who is developing skills in a variety of surgical specialties. #CA-LA

  • Surgical Technologist Education
  • The preferred entry-level education for the surgical technologist is the associate degree, but it is not required. All educational programs are expected to meet the minimal curriculum requirements defined in the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology. Only accredited programs will be considered to meet the criteria.

  • The Division of Perioperative Services delivers patient care through provision and management of capital, supplies, instrumentation, and technological support as well as human resources in collaboration with medical and para-medical staff to effectively manage patients undergoing elective, urgent, and emergent surgical intervention.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Be able to lift up to 25 pounds and push or pull up to at least 100 pounds.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, rotating shifts dictated by on call responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of AORN standards and recommended practices.
  • Knowledge of AST guidelines and AAMI recommended practices.
  • Knowledge of medical and surgical terminology.
  • Must be able to meet the essential functions of the position, standing for long periods of time, move patients and equipment.
  • Participates in emergency with short notice.
