Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The research associate will participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research studies; monitor expenditure of research funds with PI; develop, update and revise standard operating procedures; perform training duties; attend and participate in meetings, conferences and training groups; and assist in supervising student research.
The position will also assist in the development of proposals to funding agencies; develop and supervise the development of methods, techniques, and instrumentation needed to carry out research projects and results; analyze and evaluate research results; write progress reports and final reports on completion of research projects; and author and co-author manuscripts for publication and/or presentation at professional meetings and other duties as assigned.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences ( CAES) has a rich history of innovation and application of cutting-edge technology. From our pioneering Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture programs to our award-winning Cooperative Extension and Agricultural Research programs, our faculty and staff serve today's needs while keeping an eye on the future. With programs and expertise in such areas as biotechnology, agricultural and biosystems engineering, natural resources management, waste management, and food microbiology, the A&T College of Agriculture grows concurrently with the demand for qualified graduates. Our four academic departments are the Department of Agribusiness, Applied Economics and Agriscience Education; the Department of Animal Sciences; the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences; and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design. Within these departments, students will find a myriad of opportunities for classroom learning, research and field work.
Through our Agricultural Research Program and our Cooperative Extension Program, we are able to research issues of importance to North Carolina and provide research-based outreach training to citizens across the state and around the world.
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is one of four academic departments within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and is accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences ( AAFCS). The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in three program areas with the following six distinct specialty emphases: child development and family relations (non-licensure), child development, early education and family studies (birth-kindergarten licensure), consumer sciences, fashion merchandising and design, food and nutritional sciences (nutrition and pre-medicine in nutrition), and food and nutritional sciences (food science). Additionally, the department offers a Master of Science degree in food and nutritional sciences, an online Master of Arts in Teaching in family and consumer sciences education, a Master of Arts in Teaching in child development, early education and family studies (birth-kindergarten licensure), an online Advanced Certificate in family and consumer sciences and an online certificate in family financial planning. Faculty members are actively engaged in research that contributes to the body of knowledge in the areas of nutrition, food science, housing, apparel, textiles, child development, and family issues.
Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate must have earned a Master's or Ph.D. in Molecular Nutrition or Nutritional Biochemistry or related disciplines, specializing in metabolic diseases. Required experimental skills are RNA/ DNA extraction, real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blot analysis, mammalian cell culture, molecular biological skills in lipid metabolism related to obesity, and mice handling; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; ability to expand scope of literature search to solve problems on research and design new research; ability to design and adjust specific procedures as a part of the protocol; ability to search and select correct chemicals and applications to perform molecular biological works; ability to adopt advanced molecular biological works by manipulating mammalian cells and mice models; ability to manage the laboratory system such as ordering and troubleshooting experiments. Excellent interpersonal skills as well as ability to work cooperatively with other members as a team. Proven track record of conducting research and the ability to teach experimental skills to laboratory research assistants.
