Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of the Electronics Specialist role is to identify and analyze issues related to utility plant control or metering systems and provide effective solutions. It involves performing both routine preventive maintenance and assisting with non-routine meter/control installations, leveraging electronic principles. The Electronics Specialist should be comfortable troubleshooting support for thermal plant control systems, network communications, SCADA systems, and energy metering. They should also demonstrate proficiency in adhering to safety protocols and fostering a secure work environment conducive to the well-being of all individuals.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electromechanical, electronic, and digital control systems on thermal plant equipment such as chillers, boilers, pumps, fuel systems, and cooling towers

  • Repair electronic devices including meters, controllers, and computers, as well as electronic subsystems such as valves, actuators, transmitters, and sensors
  • Utilize specialized test equipment such as volt/amp meters, power meters, and pressure calibrators to diagnose and repair non-standard electronic devices and systems
  • Service and maintain digital/electronic control systems within the thermal plant
  • Perform preventative maintenance on metering and control devices to ensure operational efficiency

Other Responsibilities

  • Hours are subject to change to meet the needs of the University
  • This position is subject to emergency call back, weekend work and rotational on-call

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Associate's Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience in repairing and maintaining specialized electronic devices, knowledge of Kirchhoff's circuit laws and Ohm's Law for troubleshooting and modification, and analytical thinking skills for logical troubleshooting and hypothesis testing in various situations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and the general public. Must be able to understand instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally and have the ability to work independently and use critical thinking skills
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear plugs and additional safety equipment to include respirator, welding leathers, welding shield, hardhat, and/or other gear related to the work site

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with thermal loops (steam and chilled water) in a multi-building campus environment
  • Experience with PLC based control systems, including Honeywell HC900 based systems
  • Experience in troubleshooting data networks, computers and software to determine point of failure
