Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Professor of Health Psychology will serve as a researcher and educator in the Department of Psychology. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a funded research program as well as mentor and train both undergraduate and graduate psychology students in research techniques. The successful candidate is also expected to publish in peer reviewed journals and work collaboratively with colleagues from psychology and other related disciplines.
The successful candidate is also expected to work with psychology leadership to further implement the M.S. in Health Psychology program and to extend graduate program offerings and advance the University's goals in research and scholarship.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
As an 1890 land grant and doctoral-research university, North Carolina A&T State University enjoys a long-standing national reputation in learning, discovery, and engagement. The Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences offers programs in Health Communications, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Speech. The college has two masters degree programs (in Health Psychology and Social Work) and a PhD in Social Work. Through innovative programs, high impact, and student-centered pedagogy, faculty in the college foster an inter-professional learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty also engage in scholarly and service activities at the department, school, college, university, and community levels, and within professional organizations. Social justice and promotion of health equity are integral components of the mission of the college. The Hairston College is home to the Center of Excellence in Health Disparities and Equity Research ( CIHDER). Consistent with this mission, the college welcomes applicants representing the full diversity of intellectual perspectives, research agendas, life experiences, social-demographic, and political-cultural-backgrounds.
The Department of Psychology is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners whose goals are to introduce students to the ideas and concepts relevant to this discipline, encourage interdisciplinary learning, prepare students for study in graduate schools, prepare students for entry-level jobs requiring knowledge in psychology, and train students to conduct both basic and applied research. These goals are reached through quality classroom instruction, departmental colloquia, departmental student organizations, internship opportunities through independent study, and individualized research projects. The Department of Psychology has 800 enrolled undergraduate students, 2 cohorts of graduate students, and currently has 11 tenured/tenure-track faculty. The department is seeking candidates to join a growing program with a highly interactive and productive faculty and goals for developing a new PhD program.
Minimum Requirements
The ideal candidate is expected to have a program of broadly extramural funded research; demonstrated proficiency and evidence in mentoring and training both psychology undergraduate and psychology graduate students in research techniques; successful collaborations with colleagues from psychology and other related disciplines, and a record of publication in peer reviewed journals consistent with a senior rank at an R2 or R1 institution.

The applicant must:
a) have a doctoral degree in Psychology or a Psychology-related area;
b) demonstrate an active research stream supported by extramural funding and a publication record in their area of expertise, consistent with an appointment at the rank of professor;
c) have the ability to coordinate the research efforts of the Center of Excellence in Integrative health disparities and equity research;
d) have a history of high-quality teaching in a discipline within Psychology;
e) have a history of innovative course development and delivery skills at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
f) have a history of leadership and active engagement with diverse professionals, academics and the community.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
The ideal candidate will have a focus on health disparities/health inequities research; leadership and administrative experience; experience in research mentorship. They will contribute to creating an environment that fosters scholars from the health and human sciences that include behavioral sciences, public health, social sciences, health communication, health services research, nursing, and others. Emphasis is also placed on community engagement and dissemination.
